2026 nominee - Champion of Veteran Employment

Dr Andrew Clarke is an Australian Army veteran, medical practitioner and respected leader in veteran health and wellbeing. Drawing on both his military service and extensive medical career, he has dedicated much of his professional life to improving the lives of veterans and their families through compassionate, evidence-based care and practical advocacy.

Dr Clarke has been a passionate champion of veteran employment by creating opportunities that recognise the unique skills, leadership and resilience veterans bring to the civilian workforce. Rather than adopting a traditional fee-for-service model, he has focused on building a sustainable organisation that places veterans and their families at the centre of everything it does.

As a founding visionary and Board Member of the Veterans’ & Families’ Centre in Burnie, Tasmania, Dr Clarke has played a pivotal role in developing an integrated, community-based model of support that brings together healthcare, advocacy, wellbeing programs and social connection under one roof. His vision has helped create a trusted environment where veterans and families can access coordinated support tailored to their individual needs. He has established an organisation where veterans are employed across advocacy, administration, wellbeing, outreach and leadership roles. His philosophy is that veterans are often best placed to support other veterans, with their lived experience fostering trust, understanding and engagement.

Dr Clarke has been instrumental in strengthening partnerships between healthcare providers, government agencies, ex-service organisations and community groups, ensuring veterans receive timely access to medical treatment, rehabilitation and specialist services. His leadership has also supported the expansion of outreach programs to regional and rural communities across North West Tasmania, helping reduce barriers to care for those living outside metropolitan areas.

Dr Clarke has also championed innovative initiatives that create purposeful employment while improving access to essential services. Through the development of the MOVET transport initiative, he has sought to create flexible employment opportunities for veterans while addressing transport barriers that prevent many from accessing healthcare, rehabilitation and community support.

His commitment extends beyond direct employment. By mentoring veteran advocates, supporting professional development and fostering partnerships with government, healthcare providers and community organisations, Dr Clarke has helped build a workforce capable of delivering high-quality, veteran-centred services.

The impact of his leadership is significant. Thousands of veterans and family members have accessed support through a model that not only improves health and wellbeing outcomes but also restores purpose, connection and employment opportunities within the veteran community.

Dr Clarke continues to advocate for innovative approaches that improve veteran health, wellbeing and quality of life. His leadership has influenced thousands of veterans and families, leaving a lasting legacy through sustainable services, strong community partnerships and a steadfast commitment to those who have served Australia.
