Michael Summers is the Australian Trade and Investment Commission's Defence and Security Director for Southeast Asia. Working from the Australian High Commission in Singapore, Michael works to grow Australian defence industry exports by connecting innovative Australian companies with opportunities in Singapore and across the region.
Michael was an emancipated teen and left school for employment at the age of 15. With the support of his guardian, an Australian Army officer, Michael applied for enlistment in the Australian Army. Following recruit training, he was allocated to the Royal Australian Corps of Infantry and served for 10 years as a private soldier and junior non-commissioned officer, deploying on operations to East Timor.
Following his military service, Michael worked as a private military contractor and security advisor in Iraq and Afghanistan for 12 years. Michael then supported NGO and commercial clients with security services and professional advice in East Africa, including through the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone (2014-2016). Moving back closer to home. Michael established and ran his own small business in Singapore before joining Austrade in 2021.
Michael exemplifies service to Australia. While Austrade’s mission differs from that of the ADF, Michael has carried the same values of service, commitment and professionalism from his military career into his role supporting Australian defence industry exporters.
