Wounded Heroes Australia is a national registered charity established in 2007 with a singular purpose: to prevent veteran suicide by providing immediate, practical support to ADF members, veterans and their families experiencing crisis. Through its 24/7 Rapid Response Crisis Program, they deliver emergency financial assistance, homelessness intervention, welfare support and referrals, helping veterans when they need it most.
After two decades, Wounded Heroes has supported more than 40,000 veterans and family members and responded to over 48,000 requests for assistance.
In September 2025, Wounded Heroes opened the Townsville Veteran Centre to address the needs of one of Australia's largest defence communities. The Centre provides an integrated model combining crisis support, wellbeing services, social enterprise, volunteering, training and employment pathways within a welcoming community hub.
The Centre is an integrated employment and wellbeing hub that supports veterans, veteran partners and military families to gain and sustain meaningful employment. Recognising that successful employment often depends on addressing broader challenges such as housing, financial hardship, wellbeing and social connection, the Centre provides a holistic pathway that prepares participants for long-term workforce success. By providing opportunities to build confidence, develop skills, reconnect with the community and access wrap-around support, they help veterans prepare for sustainable employment while strengthening their wellbeing.
The initiative combines vocational training, mentoring, volunteering, work experience and paid employment opportunities within a veteran-led environment. Through their social enterprises—the Veteran Op Shop, Jim's Café and Coffee4Heroes—participants gain practical experience in retail, hospitality, administration and customer service while rebuilding confidence, developing transferable skills and reconnecting with community.
The Centre has established a sustainable employment and skills development model that is delivering measurable benefits for veterans, veteran partners and military families across North Queensland.
Beyond individual employment outcomes, the initiative is strengthening regional capacity by retaining skilled veterans in North Queensland, supporting local businesses with motivated employees and demonstrating the economic value veterans bring to regional communities. The Centre has become a catalyst for collaboration, proving that employment outcomes are strongest when integrated with wellbeing, family support and community connection.
